BARCELONA, 2021
The new opening of the Mexican restaurant chain: Gonzalez & Co, is the second one designed by Sandra Tarruella Interioristas, with the collaboration of Elsa Noms and Núria Martínez as project leaders. It sought to continue the aesthetic done on the first project, as well as turning its most representative elements into icons of the brand. The open kitchen, with the bright yellow tiles on the background, together with an illuminated sign that signals and welcomes customers, are once again the protagonists of the space. As resolved in the previous restaurant, in front of the kitchen, there is a mirror-lined wall with vertical panels of colored tiles, which give it amplitude, while becoming a distinctive symbol of the brand.
We also wanted to reutilize the cacti solution, another of the differentiating elements that these restaurants have, but with a different image. To do this, vertical cacti are placed in a planter behind the continuous bench, where both cushions and backrests with ethnic motifs – that are made with handwooven fabrics – are also used again, and being another of the restaurant icons.
In the entry area, where there are two large openings, benches and tables were placed in a more intimate and private way. All the furniture elements and the cladding of the walls and ceilings of these two openings, walnut wood finishes were applied thoroughly. As a novelty in the front area, a small bar was added so that diners can sit down to eat while watching the hustle and bustle of the street. Next to this bar, there is also a communal table for large parties of people.
In this project we utilized different types of wood with different shades to break the homogeneity. Hence, walnut wood provides a darker wood tone, oak a lighter one, and iroko provides an exotic touch.
By reutilizing the solutions used in the previous restaurant, as well as providing some new ones, we managed to maintain the Mexican-inspired aesthetic, but adapting it to the characteristics of this new space.
